Be Paranoid About Healthy Growth

Be Paranoid About Healthy Growth
By Mike Teng

John Chambers, CEO of Cisco Systems says that he possesses a healthy paranoia. He
is paranoid that Cisco may grow too far from its customers, partners and employees.
Andy Grove of Intel first wrote about paranoia in the book, Only the paranoid will
survive. Company should not just be paranoid about survival, it should also be paranoid
about healthy growth.

John Chambers grew Cisco from 1995 to become a super growth engine, which fuelled
the burgeoning demand for computer networking. Its sales revenues grew from $2.2
billion in 1995 to $18.9 billion in 2000. The profits grew from $0.84 billion in 1998 to
$4.3 billion in 2000. Without Cisco routers, there would be no World Wide Web. By
year 2000, over 75 percent of all Internet traffic traveled over Cisco products and the
future appeared bright and expected to grow from 275 million to 1 billion by 2005.

However late in 2000, the US economy went sour and by early 2001, the high-growth
Cisco System was in trouble. It was forced to write off billions of stocks and laid off
7,900 employees. The stock fell and Cisco Systems fell from its pedestal of growth.
Chambers was always mindful that Ciscos bubble might burst, although he was taken by
surprise too by the sudden turn in Ciscos fortunes. Faster than most other CEOs under
similar circumstances, Chambers restructured Cisco by putting stress on profit and cash
flow performance. He put emphasis on focus, execution, productivity and taking only
calculated risks. The company did subsequently show signs of improvements.

Another example is Donald Trumps corporate empire. He was acquiring and growing
very rapidly from real estate, hotel, casino and airlines. When the real estate market
crashed in New Year in the late 1980s, Trump was almost bankrupt. Like the proverbial
Phoenix, he emerged from the ashes and became a comeback kid in the 1990s. Both John
Chambers and Donald Trump had learnt a bitter lesson that a company must emphasise
on getting healthy first before growth and expansion.

The 1980s and 1990s were decades of growth by merger and acquisition. However, the
successes had been far and few. Also, companies that went through growth by merger
and acquisition were highly geared and paid dearly for their overburdened debt situation.
As a result many are still digesting their acquisition or prevented from further
acquisitions. In the 2000s, growth will be more organic rather than through pure
acquisitions. Companies will plan more for real growth through internal development
and expansion. Branson has risen to this challenge by building his businesses through
organic growth rather than acquisition. Growing and starting new companies enables him
to stretch his people and he enjoys providing opportunity for his employees. At the risk
of overplaying his image, this strategy fits his concept of the organisational family, one
that grows by progeny rather than by adoption.

One also ought to be paranoid if the company is not growing. The market, the staff, the
creditors and the shareholders demand growth. The bank interests, inflation, wage
increase, returns on investments are all expected to grow and therefore the company must
also grow correspondingly. Chances are that if you are not growing, your competitors are
growing at your expense. Companies need to have sustainable growth, otherwise they
are dying. Similarly, a person who totally retires is heading for the grave and need to
grow mentally in order not to become senile.

Even in so-called mature and competitive industries, companies are growing. For
instance, Dell Computers is still growing despite the very tough and mature personal
computer market. Many old companies such as Coke, Proctor and Gamble and Gillette
are still growing in the markets with hundreds of similar brands. Growth is always
possible no matter what the age is. Thomas Alva Edison deemed mentally slow by his
teachers patented a total of 1,033 inventions! His work spanned a lifetime and grew with
age, with the first patent issued at age twenty-one, his last at age eighty-one. For both
corporate and individual, the lesson is never to stop growing.

However, top line growth per se is useless, as evidenced in the demise of many dot.com
companies in the world and construction companies in Singapore. If the growth is not
accompanied by attention to costs, productivity and efficient use of resources then the
growth is not sustainable and can spell more troubles.

However, companies need to have a healthy and balanced view of growth. If growth is
done artificially to please the stock market and shareholders, then it cannot sustain. This
happens to companies that go on an acquisition binge and they get indigestion. Therefore,
one should target for healthy growth, which is based on a solid foundation

Healthy Joke

Healthy Joke
By James Good

Always laugh when you can. Its cheap medicine- These words from the prolific comedy writer, Larry Gelbart, seem to describe best what most of us know from our own experiences with laughing: it not only makes us happier, it also makes us stronger and, in many cases, healthier.

When I first came up with the idea of creating a new humor web-site, my goals, I have to admit, were quite modest. I always loved dealing with funny materials, and the site gave me a chance to know some jokes that would later help me turn even the dullest social gatherings to an orchestra of roaring laughs. But it wasnt until I started getting responses from people visiting the site that I began to realize how important even a couple of good jokes a day can be.

I became really interested in this phenomenon called humor and laughter, and began to ask myself if apart from its obvious social benefits, it also has a real physical influence. In recent years, brain-scientists has been exploring the positive responses of the body to funny experiences, a subject that has been mostly neglected and over-shadowed for ages by studies about depression, fear and anger. Though in its early stages, already some small studies imply that brain activity from humor can reduce feelings of pain, prevent negative stress reactions and boost the brains biological battle against infection.

There are also various groups of scientists and doctors who are working hard to push forward some non-conventional treatments that involves laughter as a form of therapy. Within the field of Psychotherapy, text and handbooks have appeared, all advocating the application of humor (One Psychohumorist even offers advice heavily loaded with humor on how to deal with life and work-related stress). There is an Interdisciplinary American Association for Therapeutic Humor (AATH), that promotes the healing power of laughing and humor. There are even guidelines on how to form your own local laughter clubs, which purportedly can help you achieve such idealistic goals as personal health and happiness. Around the world this kind of Laughter clubs, where people meet in circles, hold hands together and start laughing as if there is no tomorrow, are spreading quite rapidly.

Laughter becomes an important tool in keeping a healthy way of life and in treating mental and physical problems, whether big or small. While it is not always clear what is the direct influence of humor on the physical body and what is the biological response it creates, it is quite clear today that there is a beneficial effect of humor and laughter on the body, mind and spirit, and that attention only to the physical body when trying to keep a healthy being or during treatment in illness will yield only a partial or temporary recovery.

For me, the scientific researches and the testimony of both patients and caregivers, emphasizing how important a good laugh was in the therapy process, were all in harmony with the reactions I got from visitors in my site. An elderly man from Florida once wrote me that It is with the help of laughter that I keep winning the battle against all sicknesses.

Im not sure if a few jokes could promise us life of eternity, but I now know that it is exactly this kind of simple stuff that helps different people from around the world enjoy life a little more. Even if humor doesnt make us live longer, it sure does make us live better, and if it is thanks to my humor site that someone in this world could improve his life with a smile, then it sure has made my life richer and more fulfilling.

A Healthy Lifestyle Helps to Prevent Erectile Dysfunction

A Healthy Lifestyle Helps to Prevent Erectile Dysfunction
By Valerian D.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) becomes a more common condition as men age. Experts evaluate that about half of men older than 40 years have at least modest problems in achieving and maintaining an erection. Taking into consideration the US male population, that means erectile dysfunction may affect about 18 million men.

Nobody knows yet exactly why ED happens but the consequences are very serious in some cases.

A research team conducted by a scientist working for the manufacturer of Viagra concluded that men had problems in maintaining a relationship had important troubles related to depression, anxiety and self-esteem. After 10 weeks of treating erectile dysfunction, members of trial group restored self-esteem and improved their depression and anxiety condition.

Of course erectile dysfunction treatment is beneficial for people in need and many trials have confirmed the life improvements. But more important is to try to prevent this uncomfortable situation.

More and more studies confirmed that every man can avoid the physical factors that cause erectile dysfunction with just a little effort. A healthy lifestyle is very important to prevent these kind of troubles. Avoid smoking, excessive use of alcohol and high fat foods. Keep the body weight in normal limits, maintain the cholesterol and blood pressure at low level and go exercising daily.

Enjoy These Tips for Living a Healthy Life

Enjoy These Tips for Living a Healthy Life
By Deon Du Plessis

What is more important than the way you feel? Is there anything more important? Your physical health, the way your body feels, is probably the most important determining factor in the way you feel. Any feeling, weather it be physical or emotional is experienced through our bodies and by applying these simple tips for living a healthy life, the way you feel will vastly improve.

Psychoneuroimmunology, the science of the mind-body relationship, has now produced scientific evidence of the effect of your mind on your body and vice versa. Depressed people use their bodies in a certain way that causes them to feel depressed and by just changing simple things like their facial expressions, studies have shown, they can literally change the way they feel instantly.

The significance of this fact is that it proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that our physical bodies have a tremendous effect on the way we feel both physically and emotionally. The one thing we are all pursuing in life is happiness and happiness is nothing but feeling good. By following some basic tips for living a healthy life we can make significant changes in the way we feel physically, emotionally and mentally.

We've all heard the clich a healthy body houses a healthy mind and thanks to scientific research we now know this for a fact. Also, the opposite is equally true: a healthy mind equals a healthy body. If we learn to be in control of our emotional association to food, we will automatically take care of our bodies. The instant satisfaction we get from junk food caused a lot of people to make pleasurable association (in their subconscious minds) to these foods that lead to overeating and addiction.

Living a healthy life starts with your body. If you take care of your body you will develop that sense of pride in yourself and the consequently the way you feel about yourself (or your self esteem).

With this in mind, let me offer you some very simple and basic tips for living a healthy life. Firstly, realize the importance of oxygen to your body and your health. Breathing is not just to get oxygen to our vital organs. Every cell in your body requires oxygen for it's survival and health.

You are only as healthy as the cells in your body. In order to fully oxygenate our bodies we must learn to breathe deeply, fully and effectively. Deep, diaphragmatic breaths will, apart from oxygenating your system, stimulate the movement of lymph fluid through the body. Lymph is the body's natural cleansing system, essential to keeping your cells free from toxins and maintaining a healthy environment for the cells of your body to live in. To breathe properly you must breathe in the following ratio: inhale(1) : hold(2) : exhale(4). For example inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 8 seconds and exhale for 16 seconds. Doing this simple exercise with 10 deep breaths 5 times a day will vastly increase your health, your energy and help maintain a healthy immune system.

Secondly, understand the importance of water to your body and health. Our bodies consist mainly of fluids and water, along with oxygen is the basis of all life. Taking sufficient amounts of water is essential for health and life, but also we need to avoid foods that drain our bodies from vital fluids. Foods that are high in sugar, salt, caffeine and preservatives will actually absorb fluids from your body causing certain vital functions to shut down. Eating foods that are naturally rich in water is essential and include all fruits, vegetables and sprouts.

Your body is your temple and what you put in is what you get out. Stop abusing it and adhere to these simple tips for living a healthy life. The very least you must do to life a healthy life is to stop depriving your body from the two most essential element, water and oxygen.

Applying these simple tips for living a healthy life will vastly improve your health and consequently the way you feel. When we feel good life is a pleasure and we suck from it all the juice. Life is a gift and know that tomorrow is not promised to you. Live everyday like it's your last and constantly seek out tips for living a healthy life and improving yourself and the quality of your life. It's all out there and the only thing that is required to have whatever you want from life is for you to go and get it. Just do it and do it with passion and joy.

Your Child's Health

Your Child's Health
By Yana Mikheeva

Your child eats too little or, on the contrary, too much, he sleeps bad or has sudden fits of anger as a rule, this worries careful parents, the rest are just giving up on it: why bother because of small things! And meanwhile, some peculiarities of behavior and state of a childs organism give warning of his predisposition to these or those diseases or even of their development long before a doctor diagnoses them.

Usually parents pay attention to a childs body temperature: if it is normal then everything is ok, high he should take aspirin. However, it is not so simple. For example, temperature raises, and hands are cold like ice. This tells about a spasm of peripheral blood vessels. And, besides aspirin, it would be good to give an injection of analgin, diphenylhydramine and nicotinic acid a vitamin, dilating small blood vessels.

If a babys hands are always cold, this tells that excitability of his nervous system is heightened. In general, defect of heat regulation tells about vulnerability of a children organism, inability of its nervous system to cope with stresses. This concerns also such peculiarity of a baby, as sweatiness. Palms that are always wet, underwear that is covered with sweat, even if there were no any active games, - this is a signal of some defects in nervous regulation of organism. Other signs also testify to a state, close to neurosis, - a baby likes fingering something, biting nails, starts often suddenly, speaks while sleeping (dont worry, if this happens from time to time, but if this repeats every night, then there is sense to consult a neuropathologist).

If a child is always nervy, excitable, if it is difficult for you to carry him away with a game, and having started a game, he already cannot stop, falls into a reverie, reacts to attempts to interfere aggressively, goes into long hysterics, then you should not allege on his bad character these are symptoms of heightened intracranial pressure. Such child should be observed by neuropathologist constantly. Defects of thyroid glands work also may cause excessive excitability of nervous system. And you baby also may have rapid pulse. Slightly bulging eyes also tell about excess of hormones of thyroid gland. In this case you should consult endocrinologist. Old school doctors started examination with a request to show ones tongue, even if a person suffered from back or stomach pains. Tongue is a mirror of alimentary canal, all our diseases are pictured on it, not worse, than on a prescription blank.

If there is a constant yellow or white fur on a tongue, this testifies to defect of stomachs or bowels work. So-called geographic patterns on a tongue also should put you on your guard, they often are observed after long taking of antibiotics or while dysbacteriosis, lack of wholesome bacteria, populating it.

Your childs skin also can tell a lot about his organism state. Thus, while dysbacteriosis it is dry, peels off, allergic rash often appears on it. If lips are dry and chaps, this may happen due to serious defects of stomachs and bowels work. So-called marble skin pale, with clear drawing of small veins, situated close to skin surface, slightly spotty, also should put you on your guard. Quite probably, there are defects in your childs involuntary nervous systems work, which controls work of our internal automatically. This may lead to quick fatiguability, irritability, headaches.

Shadows under eyes testify to lack of iron or some vitamins in a childs organism. If sacks are formed under lower eyelids, dont hurry to make a conclusion about bad work of kidneys probably, this is just a peculiarity of hypoderm.

Pay attention to nails during teen age period they can crumble, white lags are formed on them, which signal of lack of calcium in organism. Its lack also influences state of teeth. In general, teeth are an index of the whole osseous systems state in organism. If something is wrong with them, then a childs bones have same problems.

Most often parents pay attention to very obvious things: for example, appetite and sleep. Does bad appetite tells of something? Of course, as this is a reflection of general state of a babys nervous system, its balance, comfort.

If a chills is a so-called bag of bones, has shadows under eyes, he catches cold often, you may suspect of his susceptibility to tuberculosis and in this case you need to consult phthisiatrician urgently. However, if a child eats a lot, regardless of his physical activity, and does not gain weight, this may tell about presence of worms or some psychological problems. Appetite should correspond to energy organism spends, and when a child is not mobile, likes playing quiet games, you should not worry he eats little. If, on the contrary, he is rushing about during whole day and comes back home with his tongue hanging out, most likely, you will not have to persuade him eat properly.

A childs bad sleep also worries parents. Most often healthy children dont awake in the night, but can fall asleep nor so quickly. Think whether your child sticks to a certain day schedule, goes to bed in a certain hour, watches scary cartoons or thrillers before going to bed, sitting evenings away at computer. All this excites a childs nervous system, confuses his biorhythms.

Back to School Shoes Give Your Child a Healthy Start

Back to School Shoes - Give Your Child a Healthy Start
By Tricia Salcido

Those lazy, barefoot summer days are coming to an endtime to shop for those back-to-school shoes. No doubt your kids feet have grown quite a bit (again), but getting a larger shoe should be just part of your checklist. Leading childrens podiatrists agree that choosing the proper footwear for your kids is a decision that will impact the lifelong health of your child. Good footwear not only fits, but allows your childrens toes to spread and foot to form naturally. Shoes that mold your childs foot to a contoured foot bed with arches can actually damage your childs foot, causing problems with arch pain or weak ankles that crop up in adulthood when we reach our full body weight.

FOOTBINDING IS OUT

Our feet are wonderfully complex structures with 26 bones and 126 muscles and ligaments. When born, a childs foot is quite malleable and the bones do not fully ossify until age 9. Foot bones actually function more like cartilage for those first 9 years. An extreme example of how moldable our feet are at young ages is the now-defunct tradition of Chinese foot binding. Because tiny feet were considered beautiful, young girls feet were essentially folded in half by tight bindings, deforming and often crippling them. Putting your childs feet in stiff, contoured shoes is a much less severe, but nonetheless similar process.

BAREFOOT IS BEST

The best thing that can be done for the healthy development of feet is to maximize the time your children spend barefoot. All podiatrists agree this is the best for developing strong, athletic feet and improving your sense of balance and posture. (This is true for adults, as well!) The second best is to purchase shoes that allow feet to move freely and breathe naturally.

Consider these tips when shopping:

  • Soft, flexible soles that bend easily in the middle when bending the toe towards the heel. Many soles only bend in the toe -- make sure they bend where the foot arches. Choose soft soles that mold to your childs foot rather than soles that force your childs foot to mold to the shoe.
  • Flat soles with no arch supports are best to simulate barefoot conditions. The lighter, the better!
  • Ample room for toes. True childrens shoes are much fatter in the toes than adult shoes as their feet dont narrow out until adolescence. Shoes should be loose around the toes.
  • Soft, flexible uppers that breathe. Uppers made of natural, absorbing cloth or leather are preferable to synthetic material.
